Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. She belongs to the Robertses' fourth generation that live in the Atlanta area, starting by her grandfather John Pendleton Roberts a farmer. In the early years of his life the father of her mother became obsessed by theatre. As in school in Emory University in 1952 he was a part of productions at Emory University as well as in other parts of Atlanta. After he enlisted in the Air force in Biloxi, he was seen alongside Betty Lou Bredemus in Biloxi. They married in 1955. Their first baby son Eric Anthony, was born in the year 1956. Walter attended Tulane University New Orleans Louisiana after leaving the Airforce in 1957. Walter worked for Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. In 1960, the couple relocated in Decatur Georgia. Walter and Betty Lou began producing a television show for children in the city of Decatur, Georgia titled Bum Bum and His Buddies. They financed the production by themselves. In 1964, Walter and Betty Lou founded their own organization called the Actors and Writers Workshop. The workshop lasted six years. Lelisa Billingsley often referred to as Lisa, was born in the year 1965. Julia Billingsley followed in 1967.
